Why “This
Girls Life”?
The name
is a play on the title of one of my favorite books, “This Boys Life” by
Tobias Wolff. Widely regarded as a classic tale of American boyhood, the
memoir received the Los Angeles Times book prize for biography,
and the Ambassador Book Award of the English-speaking Union.
"Few authors have reported their early
years, wasted, halcyon, or otherwise, with the same suspense, longing,
loathing, and glorious humor. The writing is clear and merciless, and
the chapters are as fluid and perfect as anything I've read in years."
- Jeff Danziger,
Christian Science Monitor, on This Boy's Life
As a budding
teenage author, this book had a huge impact on me (and not because Leo
did the movie –probably despite it). A combination of factors, from the
fact that it is set (in Concrete, Wash.) a short distance from where I
grew up (Blaine, Wash.) to the absolute honesty with which it was
written, really touched me as a writer.
